To Humiliate or Not

French President Emmanuel Macron recently warned against humiliating Russia in their current ‘special military operation’ against Ukraine, which arguably did nothing to provoke the Russian bear.

Here is one report:

Macron did not specify just how adversaries of Russia should act to prevent that country from being ‘humiliated.’

Let’s say, for the sake of argument, that we agree with Macon.

Just what should NATO and the West do (or refrain from doing)?

Withhold humanitarian and armament support?

Without the latter, Ukraine would almost certainly have fallen by now.

France itself, to its credit, is supporting the war effort in Ukraine.

There is such a thing as appeasement.

Perhaps the one person whose name is most associated with it is Neville Chamberlain, one-time Prime Minister of Great Britain (1937–1940).

He met with Adolf Hitler at least thrice and said he believed Hitler when he maintained his goals in Europe were limited. Hitler was allowed to overrun a portion of Czechoslovakia (the Sudentenland in 1938) with impunity and without resistance.
