Thinking Outside the Box

There has been much handwringing and not a little consternation over the current invasion of Ukraine by Russia.

The world is holding its collective breath at the outcome, which seems now far from certain.

Russia, the aggressor, is a much larger nation, both in size (the largest land area of any country on Earth, with 11 time zones) and population (145M).

By contrast, Ukraine, the recipient of aggression, has a population of 44M. It is about 90% the size of the state of TX and has one time zone.

More pertinent, Russia’s military dwarfs Ukraine’s in every category and is deemed superior in every element: land, sea and air.

It may be only a matter of time before Ukraine falls, although some experts in the USA and UK guesstimate the war may drag on 10–20 years.

The impact on the global economy is uncertain, but, save for select industries, is generally pernicious.

Democracy isn’t necessarily cheap.

Gas prices have risen and may rise further if Russian petrol imports are banned.

The economies of Russia and Ukraine, in particular, are suffering and will continue to suffer.
