Think Vertical

We are accustomed to thinking horizontal.

In the x and y axes of analytic geometry.

There is nothing intrinsically wrong with this.

Particularly if one has the space (read ‘land’) to accommodate this.

Which, in certain places, one has.

In other parts of the world, not so much.

Some billionaires own parts of whole islands.

Larry Ellison, for instance, founder of the software company Oracle, owns most (98%) of Lanai, in Hawaii.

Lanai, HI

Mark Twain, American humorist and writer, extolled the virtues of land ownership.

“Buy land,” he said. “They ain’t making any more of it.”

Which, while technically true, isn’t necessarily the case.

Some predict the islands of Hawaii, our 50th state, will someday sink back into the ocean, from which they came, perhaps never to be seen again.

Other lands may form, such as from volcanic activity, as did the islands of Hawaii.

About 70% of our planet is covered with water.

But the remaining 30%, land, is unevenly distributed.

Some is sparsely populated.

Others, densely.
