Latest news: POLITICO got ahold of and published a 98-page leak from the SCOTUS indicating that 5 members of the U. S. Supreme Court (alphabetically: Samuel Alito, Amy Comey, Neil Gorsuch, Brett Kavanaugh and Clarence Thomas, all Republican appointees) were prepared to overturn Roe vs. Wade, the 1973 decision that gives a woman a federally guaranteed choice about what to do with her body when she finds herself pregnant.

As a matter of record, polls indicate 59% of Americans favor abortion.

So we know the majority position.
It seems to be under attack.
This piece will not examine the pros and cons of abortion.
They have been discussed at length elsewhere.
Here is a brief summary:
Most Americans have an opinion.
Some favor abortion upon demand.
At the other end of the spectrum, there are those who would deny it under any and all circumstances.
Including pregnancy resulting from incest or rape.
In between are those who are OK with it up to a certain point, such as the 1st trimester (say 13 weeks of an average 39-week gestation).
Some are more stringent.
They would forbid it past say the 6th week (at which point many women do not even know they are pregnant).
