In May, 2015, I bought the 27” desktop iMac I currently use.

It came with a cordless keyboard and Magic Mouse, both utilizing Bluetooth technology. The whole hardware setup is a comparative wonder, a successful marriage of design and function. Though Steve Jobs has passed, the products of his genius live on. I think he would be pleased.

My prior mouse and keyboard were wired. So long as they were connected, I didn’t have to be concerned with power.

Both current keyboard and mouse use AA batteries. Disinclined to have to regularly purchase such, I elected to use rechargeables, which are initially more expensive but can be recharged many times. Just how many remains to be seen.

Recently a message flashed on my computer screen: “Mouse batteries low. Replace soon.”

I appreciate this warning. Without it my batteries would likely run completely dead.

This reminds me of an early version of the VW Beetle, which lacked a fuel gauge but was otherwise also a marriage of design and function. I’ve owned a couple Beetles. They were among the best cars I’ve had.

Instead of a fuel gauge, there was a lever mounted above the floorboard which one turned 90 degrees to access a spare petrol reservoir. Upon doing so, one could drive maybe 50 miles before the petrol ran out for good…
