Not Quite In Agreement

A recent posting caught my eye.

Actress Halle Berry, who has a star on the Hollywood walk of fame, recently posted a photo of herself on Instagram.

While simultaneously artistic and appealing, the photo does not easily reveal its subject. Long hair hides her face, which is looking down. She is nude above the waist. Her breasts are largely concealed. White pants provide stark contrast to the remainder of the photo.

It garnered 286,270 ‘likes’ as of the time of my screen capture.

I, too, like it.

It appeals to my sense of aesthetics.

Ms. Berry is undeniably comely.

The posting also contains this caption, by Ms. Berry: “Self-love is never selfish.”

It is this caption that I disagree with.

It might have read: “Self-love is not always selfish,” or verbiage to that effect.

To say self-love is never selfish is both dogmatic and sometimes wrong, in my opinion.

I understand the reasoning behind the quote — that, in order to love others optimally, we need love ourselves first.
