“Angels walk among us. Sometimes the only thing we may not see are the wings upon their backs.”
- Molly Friedenfeld, American writer
This is not a movie review per se.
Rather, it is a putting down of some observations from a spiritual perspective after viewing THE OLD GUARD, a 2020 action/fantasy film starring Charlize Theron and others.
In brief, the conceit is based on the Image Comics of the same name (creator: Greg Rucka), and envisions a small (4–5) elite band of immortals who may be ultimately mortal but, during their immortality, bring good to humanity. They do this over the centuries, all over the world. That good may take the form of periodic intervention in the affairs of mankind.
Just as there are many tragedies in life, so there are inexplicable examples of good fortune. We may think that they are accidental or fortuitous. They may not be.
As Andy (nickname for Andromache the Scythia, name of character played by Theron, in a memorable, credible performance) remarks near the movie’s end, the band may not have all the answers, but they operate with purpose.
I will not be issuing any significant spoiler alerts. I will not address the plot.
