N is 23.
She lives with me.
Lest you get the wrong idea, I hasten to add she also lives with D, who’s also in his 20s.
They came from Ukraine as a couple in September, 2023.
I am sponsoring them.
When Russia invaded Ukraine in February, 2022, POTUS Joe Biden opened the USA to 100,000-250000 Ukrainians, provided they could find sponsors.
I happen to be one sponsor.
Millions of Ukrainians (of about 37M) have been displaced.
Most have fled to Germany and Poland, as well as other parts of Europe, but others have gone to a variety of countries, including Canada, Spain, Great Britain and Ireland.
Vladimir Putin called his invasion of another sovereign country a ‘special military operation,’ perhaps to downplay its significance, but we know better.
It has morphed into a full-scale war and many people on both sides have suffered, are suffering, and will continue to suffer as long as the war is being waged.
Property loss totals in the hundreds of billions, and the loss of life has been considerable on both sides.
I thought, if citizens of other countries can open their homes and hearts to victims of Putin’s aggression, why cannot I?
