In 1987 a quirky, likely anachronistic (in dialogue), and charming (to some) movie was released: “The Princess Bride.”

Based on the 1973 fantasy romance novel of the same name by screenwriter William Goldman, it was directed by auteur Rob Reiner and featured actress Robin Wright as Buttercup and actor Cary Elwes as Westley.

Plus a sizable cast of other characters, some outlandish.

With time, the film has achieved a virtual cult following, and appears on the list of best films of 1987.

Goldman wrote numerous screenplays, including those for movies (alphabetically):

“A Bridge Too Far”

“All the President’s Men”

“Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid”

“Chaplin”

“Harper”

“Marathon Man”

“Maverick”

“Misery”

“The Princess Bride”

“The Stepford Wives”

But what I remember most is something he wrote in a nonfiction work, “Adventures in the Screen Trade,” when he opined that basically no one knew anything in the movie industry.
