Article 5 and Matthew 25

February 24, 2024 is just around the corner.

Why do I mention that date?

Because it will mark the 2nd anniversary of the invasion of the sovereign nation of Ukraine by its much larger bordering neighbor, Russia.

However, Russia’s aggressive actions on February 24, 2022 were anything but neighborly.

Millions have been displaced.

The Ukrainian diaspora may never be fully catalogued.

Untold tens of thousands (perhaps more) have died or been maimed.

On both sides.

Again, accurate figures may never be known.

Ukrainian property loss figures in the trillions of dollars.

If the stones by the roadside where iniquity has been perpetrated could cry out, they might.

As has been pointed out by trenchant observers, if Russia stopped fighting, the war would end.

If Ukraine stopped fighting, Ukraine would cease to exist.

I am sponsoring a Ukrainian couple who are living with me, likely for two years.

18th century Irish statesman Edmund Burke opined, “No one ever made a greater mistake than he who did nothing because he could do only a little.”

One of the ostensible reasons for the invasion was Russia’s desire that Ukraine not join NATO.
