Am I My Brother’s Keeper?

This is what Cain rhetorically asked after he’d killed his brother Abel in the 1st recorded murder of Holy Writ in the book of Genesis. It’s perhaps the 1st record of insult being added to injury.

The poet John Donne, is his ‘Devotions Upon Emergent Conditions, #17,’ wrote this in 1623: “No man is an island… Any man’s death diminishes me, because I am involved in mankind; and therefore, never send to know for whom the bell tolls; it tolls for thee.”

The U.N. had an estimated budget of $3.85B for the Middle East country of Yemen, just to the south of Saudi Arabia. To date countries have pledged $1.7B, or less than half that goal. The U.N. has called the situation in Yemen ‘the world’s worst humanitarian crisis’ and the amount pledged “disappointing.”

The U.N. may be right about Yemen, right now, being the worst crisis. As far as food supply and impending or actual starvation, the worst geographic area generally is sub-Saharan Africa.
