A Man Named Jesus

One of the benefits of life is the opportunity to learn.

Once one crosses into the valley of the shadow of death, there is no such opportunity.

With good fortune, I’ve yet to descend into that valley.

And when one is too old to learn, I believe, one is truly too old.

I didn’t know of Jesus Garcia until today.

His name is ordinary enough. I would venture to guess there may be many (thousands, if not more) men around the world with that name.

But there was only one who did what he did that fateful day: November 7, 1907.

As in some other endeavors, all it takes is one.

As Australian writer Bryce Courtenay recognized when he entitled his 1989 novel, “The Power of One.”

572M people in the world speak Spanish.

Over half of Latino adults identify as Catholics.

Thus the popularity of the given name.

And Garcia surely is a common surname.

Jesus was only 23 when, as a Mexican railroad worker, he saved an entire town, Nacozari, a small copper mining…
